About Home Equity Insider
Why We Built This
Home equity investments are usually marketed with what you don't pay: no monthly payments, no interest rate, not a loan. The real cost is a share of your home's future value, settled years later, which makes it hard to see what you're actually paying or to compare one provider with another, let alone with a HELOC, a home equity loan, or a reverse mortgage.
We built Home Equity Insider to make that cost transparent. Our calculators turn each provider's terms into an estimated dollar payoff and an effective APR for your own scenario, so you can compare home equity investments with each other and with other ways of borrowing against your home, and make an informed decision. Sometimes the right answer is a different product, and our guides say so.
Who’s Behind It
Home Equity Insider was founded by a CFA charterholder and institutional fixed income portfolio manager who specializes in securitized products, the corner of the bond market where home equity investments, mortgages, and other consumer assets are bundled and sold to investors. That investor-side experience is the lens we use: looking past the marketing to how an agreement is actually priced. Our founder also has hands-on experience in the reverse mortgage market, which informs our comparisons of the two products.
How We Work
- Same method for every provider. Our estimates are modeled from publicly available information about each provider and run through the same calculations, so the comparisons are apples to apples.
- One yardstick. We express costs as an estimated effective APR alongside the dollar amount you'd owe, so a home equity investment can be compared with a loan.
- Independent. We may earn money when you connect with a provider, but that never changes our numbers, rankings, or conclusions. See How We Make Money.
- Estimates, not offers. Providers set your actual terms. Always confirm them directly before you sign anything.
What We Aren’t
We're not a lender, broker, or financial advisor, and nothing on this site is financial advice. See our Terms of Use.
